Interior design programs prepare the design student for the exciting and challenging world of interior design. A designer will run into during their career many different design situations. On occasion, as a designer you may run into the ideal client. A client that says to spare no expense on the decorating would be an ideal client. They just want you to make it fantastic!

Other clients are much less accommodating. Interior design programs will prepare the student for these types of clients as well. A less accommodating client will set a low budget and ask many questions. The knowledgeable designer will have the answers though.

The interior design student will learn how to get the client a good return on their decorating investment. The interior design programs offered by many colleges and universities teach the student how to turn a small investment in decorating into a good return on investment. For example, a minor bathroom remodeling can be one of the best ways to recoup an investment. In the bathroom, change the light fixtures, sinks, tile, countertops, shower, and bathtub area.

Another area of the home that garners a good return on investment is the kitchen area. Changes made in the kitchen include a new stove, new kitchen cabinets, a new countertop and some new flooring. Students can expect to learn this type of interior design in interior design programs.

Students will learn to work with a budget as well. Most clients will not have an unlimited budget to work with. Learning to work on a budget is a valuable skill and the interior designer must be good at it. Working on a budget does not mean the design changes will reflect the amount of money spent. Painting interior walls in neutral colors is a well-known budget conscious design tool. Changing light fixtures is another budget conscious decorating idea. You will be surprised how much these minor changes affect a room.

Interior design programs spend a lot of time on client relations. Many students enroll with plenty of creative ideas but many of these same students lack the people skills to work with clients. An interior design program will prepare the student for this important skill.

Interior designers can specialize in private homes or even office and restaurant design. Many students do not make that decision until enrolled in an interior design program where they find their niche in interior design.

Upon graduating from an interior design program, the student can enter into an apprenticeship with an experienced designer the student admires.

Interior design is a highly competitive profession and the more education the student has the better they are prepared to enter this exciting profession.

Students can earn a bachelors degree from an Interior Design College. A good school will provide the student with the ability to apply their creative ideas and techniques to professional interior design. These areas of interior design are planning, designing, equipping and furnishing commercial and residential interior spaces.

The student at an interior design college will learn the principles of computer application drafting (CAD) and graphic techniques. In addition, the student learns the effects of interior lighting, acoustics, color coordination, integrating systems, furniture and furnishings. However, that is not all, interior design also covers such things as textiles, textile finishing’s, the history of interior design and the various different period styles. Lastly, the student should expect to learn about basic structural design and building codes and inspection regulations. In addition, how the regulations apply to residential and commercial interior design.

Several well qualified Interior Design Colleges and schools offer the student a well-rounded curriculum that enhances the student’s creativity along with the human factor of interior design. Students need not only learn about the creative aspects of interior design. The business side of interior design and how to deal with clients, is also an important topic to be studied. Without people, the interior designer has no work.

The typical interior design student is creative, energetic and curious. Interior design is a creative and quite varied career. No two designs are the same, the designer needs to use a variety of techniques and methods to create a desirable living space that pleases their client.

Interior Design College will arm the student with insight and knowledge to prepare them for an exciting and profitable career in Interior Design. The interior designer’s ultimate and main goal is to transform plain generic areas into beautiful and creative spaces that meet the personalities of the interior designer’s clients.

An Interior Design College in the United States offer four-year baccalaureate degrees in Interior Design. Universities offer the same type of program. Some colleges offer Interior Design as a stand-alone program only. Students may pursue a Masters degree in Interior Design but this is much less common. You will find students that pursue their more advanced degree in a related design subject such as fine art or industrial design.

Interior design college institutions have expanded beyond the traditional classroom or studio based instruction. Online degree programs now are being offered in interior design. The online programs are just as comprehensive as the studio-based programs.

It would be beneficial for the student to attend an Interior Design College that is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, the primary accreditation agency for interior design education programs in the United States.

School or program within a university in order to prepare for these careers in interior design.

FIDER, the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research, is the national accrediting board for interior design programs in colleges and universities in North America. There are more than 130 member schools that have been accredited by FIDER since its inception. For an aspiring interior designer, FIDER accredited listings are a perfect reference for help in your decision about schools to which you are interested in applying. FIDER sets the standards that the design schools held accountable to, and insures instruction at the accredited schools maintain their classes according to these standards.

Interior design, as interior designers will tell you, is not the same as interior decorating. Although there are many creative and decorative elements to the interior designer’s job, most of their work is focused on the actual buildings themselves, from the height of the walls, the materials for floors, position of stairs, location of windows, whatever a room needs to become an inside space, an interior designer may have a hand in it.

Many students do not realize the technical and engineering side to the craft when they enroll, and things are often more difficult than they had foreseen. However, a successful interior designer must master many elements in order to truly create a well-designed beautiful space. Courses in an interior design program will contain many area specific themes, such as color theory, as well as business ethics, in order to make sure a designer that comes out of their program is well rounded and knowledgeable in all areas of business, not only design business. Design schools also require course be taken in a specific order, like four year universities, so that completion of specific levels will enable a student to successfully move up to the next level.

These design programs are becoming increasingly and incredibly popular. Hundreds of design students may find themselves vying for a very small number of open slots at many of the premier programs. Many students also find that their portfolios are more important than particular grades, and creativity is often rewarded more than in many schools

Many believe that the popularity of DIY and home design television shows of all types of themes has created the boom in interior design’s popularity. Many people have been exposed to a whole new world through these shows and are eager to try their hand.

Of course the best method to increase your chances for acceptance is to send out multiple applications. There are many students applying, but there are also many schools to choose from, so if you would like to become a designer, do your research and get to work on those applications!
